Several theories have been proposed
about the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition. One theory states that it
is a modern amalgamation of two older superstitions: that thirteen is an unlucky number and that Friday is an unlucky day.
In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the
twelve months of the year, twelve hours of the clock, twelve gods of Olympus, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, the 12 successors of Muhammad in Shia Islam, etc., whereas the number
thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is
also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one
of the diners.Friday has been considered an unlucky day at least since the 14th century's The Canterbury Tales, and many other professions have regarded Friday as an unlucky day to undertake journeys, begin new projects or deploy releases in production. Black Friday has been associated with stock market crashes and other disasters since the 1800s.
So, it's time to change all that bad luck and superstition. Today Tara and I have a treat for you. Not one, but TWO free books, just in case you decide to curl up with a good book and ward off all that bad luck waiting out there to jump on you.

I thought that Friday the 13th was when the Knights Templar were being rounded up, tortured to get so called confessions and killed. Many died that unlucky day in fact most did. Others hid and many are still looking for signs of them and their treasures they hid. That was when the Catholic Church denounced them because they were becoming richer than the current Pope, so he wanted to execute them and strike name THE NIGHTS TEMPLAR from all records if he could. I did Not look this up before writing this but I think I am close...
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. Here's what I read:
DeleteThe connection between the Friday the 13th superstition and the Knights Templar was popularized in Dan Brown's 2003 novel The Da Vinci Code and in John J. Robinson's 1989 work Born in Blood: The Lost Secrets of Freemasonry. On Friday, 13 October 1307, hundreds of the Knights Templar were arrested in France, an action apparently motivated financially and undertaken by the efficient royal bureaucracy to increase the prestige of the crown. Philip IV was the force behind this ruthless move, but it has also tarnished the historical reputation of Clement V. From the very day of Clement V's coronation, the king falsely charged the Templars with heresy, immorality and abuses, and the scruples of the Pope were compromised by a growing sense that the burgeoning French State might not wait for the Church, but would proceed independently. However, experts agree that this is a relatively recent correlation, and most likely a modern-day invention.
The Knights Templar do figure into the unlucky Friday the 13th and that adds another whammy to JD's post. Remember though...13 is a lucky number in Asia, and as a prime number is divisible by itself which according to numerology makes it a number of transition. Breath easy, this cam mean luck as well as no luck. lol
ReplyDeleteI once had a lunatic stalking boyfriend born on Friday the 13th. Makes sense to me!

Years ago I worked in a building across the street from a theater running the play, "Cats." On Friday the 13th, a group of the cats came outside and played on ladders in front of the theater and did all sorts of cat behaviors and interacted with passersby. It was so adorable, and I've always remembered it.
ReplyDeleteBut heck, you can have bad luck any day. It doesn't have to be Friday the 13th... ;-)
And I already have both those books. One is a TBR. Thanks.

Thanks for providing insight into the superstitions. 13 has always been a lucky number for me and Friday...well, who doesn't like Friday these days? (wink)
ReplyDeleteI think it's time to retire this day's reputation. Some years there are 13 moons, so there ya go.
Excellent point about the 13 moons. Yeah, used to actually look forwards to Friday...any Friday. Just quit the day job to write full time. Yay!

Thirteen has always been my "lucky number". Friday the 13th is a great day! I married a man who has 13 letters in his name, and he is the 2nd of 13 children! I thought it was great that we had 13 grandchildren, another came along, then there were 14! They are all great! Unfortunately, they live all over - Alaska, New Mexico, Indiana, and Missouri. Isn't email and facebook great? Keepin' in touch!
ReplyDeleteHave a great Thirteenth everyone!
Wow! The 13th has been your lucky number. How fortunate you are to have such a wonderful family. Wishing you more lucky thirteens as time goes by.
